N.K. Premachandran is an Indian politician and a member of the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP). He currently represents the Kollam Lok Sabha constituency in the Lok Sabha. Born on May 25, 1960, in Navaikulam (which lies on the Kollam-Trivandrum border). His educational background includes a Bachelor of Science degree from Fatima Mata National College, Kollam, and he passed LLB from Government Law College, Thiruvananthapuram with record marks and first rank in 1985.

 

N.K.Premachandran has had a distinguished political career. He served as the Minister for Water Resources in the Government of Kerala, overseeing areas such as irrigation, groundwater development, water supply, and sanitation. He has been a member of both houses of the Parliament of India (Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha). Known for his eloquent public speeches, he has also authored a book titled “Oh Iraq”, based on his travel experiences in Iraq. Notably, he championed the issue of the safety of the Mullaperiyar Dam and initiated innovative steps in the drinking water sector, including the establishment of the consultancy wing Wascon within the Kerala Water Authority and the proposal for a bottled water plant and pipe factory.

 

Throughout his political journey, Premachandran held various positions at both state and national levels. He was elected to the Navaikulam Grama Panchayat between 1987 and 1995, served as a Member of District Panchayat in 1995, and was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1996, 1998, and 2014 from the Kollam Constituency. Additionally, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2000. His oratory skills and commitment to public service have made him a respected parliamentarian. In the 2019 Indian general election, he secured a record margin of 1.5 lakh votes in winning the Kollam Lok Sabha constituency.
