Thazhathangady Juma Masjid
The 1000-year-old Thazhathangady Juma Masjid, is situated at a distance of around 10 km from Kumarakom. This mosque is famously known as Thazhathangadi Mosque, which lies on the banks of River Meenachil. It is more than 1000 years old and is considered to be one of the oldest mosques in India.The Thazhathangadi Juma Masjid, is one of the oldest mosques in the country. It is believed that Habib Dinar, son of Malik Dinar who introduced Kerala to Islam, constructed the masjid.The picturesque beauty of the Masjid, on the banks of River Meenachil, attracts many visitors. Architecturally, it is a work of art. The carved wooden gabled roof, the beautiful inner courtyard, the latticed windows and the traditional bathing area all combine to give it a look of royalty.
There are two graves in the mosque, that of Malik Ibn Dinar and of the mason who constructed the mosque. There is also a sacred well with stone steps like the ones commonly seen in temples. The Government of Kerala has declared the mosque as one of its protected monuments.
